The skincare world is overwhelming. I get it. There are so many different products around it’s hard to know exactly what you should and shouldn’t be using. But here’s a secret, you don’t have to use it all.
Sure, some people are out there talking about their 10 step morning skincare routine but if you’re still trying to figure out exactly what a toner does then it’s time to take a step back and focus on the real basics of a routine to get you started.
Too many products all at once can overload our skin with different ingredients that are fighting against each other and ultimately confuse our skin causing it to become congested or result in more of the exact problems we were trying to tackle.
If you wander the aisles of Boots with resting confused face or open your bathroom cabinet and are not sure where to start then hopefully I will be able to help. That’s the aim of ‘Skincare for Starters’, which I’ve just decided is going to be my new blog series. We’ll see how it goes…
First up is a round up of what I believe to be the three essential steps to any morning skincare routine. Once you get these three simple steps in to your head your morning skincare routine will come as naturally to you as brushing your teeth.
Yes I know you’re not wearing any makeup because (I’m praying) you removed it all the night before, but throughout the night your skin will have produced oil and collected grime from those dirty sheets you keep promising to put in the wash soon. So, yes you do have to cleanse your skin in the morning.
For a morning cleanse I’d recommend something light, like a gel cleanser that your simply massage in to your skin, emulsify with a small amount of water, and then wipe away with a damp muslin cloth/microfibre cloth/flannel – whatever takes your fancy.
Gel cleansers are suitable for pretty much all skin types, shouldn’t leave skin feeling dry or tight, and instead feel refreshing and light first thing in the morning.
Here are some I’ve tried myself recently and have very much enjoyed:
Now your skin is squeaky clean it’s time to pack in any moisture that’s been lost and get it looking and feeling perfectly plump for the day ahead. For this step, you want to look out for products containing super hydrating ingredients. If you’re not sure where to start look for anything that says ‘hyaluronic’ on it and you’ll be heading in the right direction.
My personal preference when it comes to this step is a hyaluronic acid based serum. Something lightweight that doesn’t feel heavy or greasy and with sink in nice and quickly so I’m not waiting around to start my final step. You could also opt for a hydrating mist if you prefer.
Here are some of my recommendations:
You’re cleansed, you’re hydrated, you’re almost good to go. But not quite. Remember one of the number one rules of skincare, always wear protection.
Protection is key to the prevention premature ageing via external factors such as the sun, pollution, blue light etc. Essential products that put a filter between your lovely skin and the dark and harsh realities of the outside world. The most important of all being SPF.
Before you say anything, yes you do need to protect all year round. UVA rays (the ones that age our skin) penetrate through in all weather, so don’t think you can skip this step. OK, maybe if you’re not leaving the house you can. I’ll let you off.
People are often concerned that wearing SPF everyday will cause their skin to breakout but this isn’t the 90s. There are some wonderful non-greasy formulas around nowadays that not only protect your skin but create a wonderful base for makeup application.

So, there you have it. Cleanse, Hydrate and Protect – a simple three step morning skincare routine anyone can cope with in the morning that will keep your skin feeling happy.
Of course, you can add in products as you go, such as vitamin serums and exfoliating toners, but get these three steps nailed first and you’re on your way to beautiful skin. No excuses now!
